Six Ways the Holistic Approach Is a More Effective Type of Alcohol and Drug Rehab

Understand how a complete path to recovery can create lasting change in your life and your relationships.

It can be hard enough to urge someone abusing alcohol or drugs to enter a rehabilitation program. If it’s not the right kind of program and they fail at getting sober, this can decrease their likelihood of ever trying rehab again.

That’s why it’s so important to do one’s homework. Not every rehab facility is created equally. Some rely on cookie-cutter 12-step rehabilitation, while others, such as Elevate Addiction Services, take the whole person into consideration—including their spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical wellbeing.

This is just one component of the holistic care at Elevate Addiction Services. Patients who experience our holistic approach firsthand will quickly see how we’re different from other rehab facilities.

In fact, we’d go so far to say as our treatments can be quite efficient, more so than traditional 12-step programs. Here are six ways holistic care can help with addiction to alcohol or drugs.

  1. Holistic Rehab Is a Non-12-Step Program

The typical 12-step program is a regularly used means of getting a patient to open up about their difficulties with alcohol or drugs, Some of the steps, which come directly from Alcoholics Anonymous, include claiming to have no power over one’s behavior, giving in to a higher power, tracking all the bad deeds committed during addiction for reproach, and apologizing to those around the addict.

A 12-step program puts all the responsibility for fixing an addiction on the addict themselves. This is an immense amount of pressure on top of the guilt, depression, and other bad feelings the addict may already be harboring.

Holistic rehab is non 12 step rehabilitation. There’s no finger-pointing and blame at Elevate Addiction Services, just treatment for addiction. We use SMART Recovery, which is always-changing and pushes for self-reliance and self-empowerment.

  1. The Holistic Approach Can Be Personalized

That’s why we believe so strongly in the holistic approach. It can be personalized to each patient’s unique needs. For instance, most patients stay at our inpatient program for 90 days, but that’s just an average. Others have gone longer and some have stayed even less time.

We’re not worrying about how much time a patient spends here. Instead, we’re tracking their results and progress and using those as the markers to determine if they’re working through their addiction.

  1. There’s a Spiritual Element Not Found in Other Types of Rehab

The spirit can be broken down after months or even years of abusing alcohol and drugs. Many programs ignore the spirit though, believing if they can just determine the cause of the addiction, then it can be treated.

That’s not how we do it at Elevate Addiction Services. With exercise programs, massage therapy, music and art therapy, healthy meal plans, and mindfulness, the spirit is refreshed and ready to make major changes, such as sobriety.

  1. The Emotional/Mental Side Is Nourished As Well

It is important to get to the root cause of addiction, but this can only occur once the spirit and body are nourished. Our staff will rely on several modalities to get the patient feeling ready to open up about their past and reform their future. These include one-on-one counseling, dialectical behavior therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy.

  1. There’s a Physical Component

Physical fitness can help patients feel better about themselves and ease withdrawal symptoms. Whether it’s group activities like volleyball and basketball, strength-building exercises like weightlifting, or spending time outside among the beautiful mountains and lakes of the Bay Area, we’re big proponents of physical activity.

With our yoga therapy and experiential adventure therapy, physical activity is not only rewarding, but it’s healing as well.

  1. There’s Less Reliance on Addictive Medications

Speaking of withdrawal, many rehab facilities will administer addictive medications to lessen the painful and mood-altering symptoms of withdrawing. With the holistic approach used here, medication is not our first solution for those symptoms. As mentioned, with physical activity, aromatherapy, massage therapy, and healthier eating, rebuilding the body is possible.

If you have a friend or loved one with a drug or alcohol program, you want them to get the best care. With holistic treatment at Elevate Addiction Services, it’s possible to get sober without a 12-step program.
